6 August 1999 Hello From the Tech Chair Thanks for all of the wonderful feedback on the SP5 article. Many of you came through once again and it is well appreciated! While this issue does have a number of tips and links to valuable Windows 2000 data, I have also included a number of additional SP5 sites per your requests. When you read the data below on SP5 please remember that I am presenting a number of problems readers have reported although it should be noted that approximately 90% of the hundreds of replies we received reported SP5 as okay. You should also keep in mind that SP6 is in BETA as you read this and more articles are on the way. Send us what you know or questions you may have and we'll check into it for you. Tip: Here's a little keyboard tip if you don't already know. If you do not have a Windows keyboard, use CTRL + ESC to bring up the Start menu. This is true on a Windows keyboard also and works in Windows 98/95/NT. Tidbit : Windows2000: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/NT5Help/Enterprise/en/nt_frame.htm This site has the same info that comes on the Windows 2000 Beta CD. Look here for an overview and answers. --------- SP5 I am collecting your experiences with SP5 to see common successes and issues. Please send to me your data on SP5. Put SP5 in the subject field or use this link: Here is a very well written article about SP5 and SP6 and it's a valuable read. It addresses SQL, RAS and other situations that came up with SP5: http://www.idg.net/go.cgi?id=146673 Here are a few more SP5 analytical stories from users. An asterisk (*) marks the beginning of their email to me: CAD *I run 3 computers under NT 4, with a mixed bag of CAD, Office, Photo, Graphics software. Each has SP5 and IE5 installed. The only time I have trouble with any of them, is when I am too darn lazy (or stupid) to re-apply SP5 after tinkering. DELL *I do have one Dell GX1 with ATI Rage 3D video. I noticed no problems when I set the machine up and the user has not reported any. I did use freshly downloaded NT drivers from the Dell web site. Also, SP5 was applied to the machine as the last step during a complete NT4 setup. *Regarding the Dell ATI video problem, I discovered that going back to the older SP3 Dell version of the driver (available at their website as Ver 5.01 dd0208c.exe 6/23/98) fixed the display problems created with SP5. Hope this helps some who were having the video issues on their GX1's. ADAPTEC *When I installed SP5 everything was fine, but my Sony 5000 tape drive would not load. It used the generic 4mmdat driver. If I used the tape devices, it would find and load the tape driver, but a reboot, would cause it to forget. After much wasted time, I called Adaptec, and told them the version of the 29xx driver that sp5 came with. They said MS wrote it and they were not responsible, but to download their latest driver. I did and my tape stayed installed. I am using an Adaptec 2910c card (AHA-2910C PCI-to-Fast SCSI). SMS *SP5 of NT doesn't allow the SMS 2.0 MMC to run. I had to reinstall the operating system and use SP4 instead. -----------
