NT chkdsk utility

The NT version of chkdsk includes the functions performed by the msdosversions of chkdsk and scandisk. It will check both the file system, either FAT or NTFS and scan the disk for physicalerrors. To do this you must use both the /f and /r parameters. The machine may need to reboot to run the utilityas to repair the disk it must have exclusive access to all files.

If you use chkdsk on a very large disk (say 70 GB) or a disk withmillions of files it may take a long time and you cannot interrupt it. If you reboot NT will detect that chkdskdid not complete its run and will restart it.

If errors are reported chkdsk should be run again until it has a cleanrun (no errors reported). If many errors are reported you must suspect that the disk may fail and should make surethat you have backups and replace the disk at the earliest opportunity.

There are two ways of starting chkdsk. At the command prompt typeCHKDSK d: /F/R where ‘d’ is the drive letter to be checked. From the NT GUI in Explorer right click on the diskand choose Properties, select the Tools tab and click the Check Now button. There are two option boxes that appear, select both and then click OK. Either chkdsk will run or you will get a message telling you that you can scheduleit for the next reboot.
