Which System files can be renamed so they can be processed by Diskeeper?
What are the most fragmented files on most system disks and what can I do about them?
How can I handle a high "mean fragments per file" on my system disk?
The most fragmented files on most system disks are usually:
-
ERRLOG.SYS
-
ACCOUNTNG.DAT
-
OPERATOR.LOG
-
SECURITY_AUDIT$SYSTEM.LOG
-
The Diskeeper output file, if Diskeeper is installed on the system disk.
To find out if this is the case on your system disk, go into the Diskeeper Mini-Menu and run:
$ FAU diskname /MOST_FRAGMENTED_FILES
To allow Diskeeper to defragment the first two of the above files, do the following:
-
Rename ERRLOG.SYS to ERRLOG.OLD. Diskeeper will now defragment ERRLOG.OLD.
-
For ACCOUNTNG.DAT, use
$ SET ACCOUNTING /NEW_FILE
. Diskeeper will now defragment the older version as it is not open.
OPERATOR.LOG and SECURITY_AUDIT$SYSTEM.LOG are recreated every time at boot time, so you need not be concerned.
Each Diskeeper output file is only open when the disk it logs is being defragmented. Thus the log for the disk where Diskeeper is installed must be open when that disk is being defragmented, and will never be defragmented. When the disk is not being defragmented, you can rename the Diskeeper log file; Diskeeper will create a new one the next time it runs. For instructions on automating this procedure, click
