Icons on my Desktop disappeared after I ran Diskeeper

If Diskeeper moves the hidden file %systemroot%\ShellIconCache and certain actions are taken with the Recycle bin at about the same time, icons may disappear from the desktop and/or Explorer may fail to initialize properly. If this happens, the following steps almost always fix the problem:

If the Recycle Bin is enabled, disable it and click Apply.

Enable the Recycle Bin and click Apply

Change the color scheme on the desktop and click Apply

Reboot

If Recycle Bin was disabled when you started this procedure, disable it again.

These steps have worked almost every time. If they do not work, then leave the Recycler on and delete some files (putting files in the Recycle Bin), change some other aspect of the desktop and reboot. The key seems to be to have data in the Recycled (on FAT partitions) or the Recycler (on NTFS partitions) directories and to have changed the desktop.

You should also add the hidden file %systemroot%\ShellIconCache to the Diskeeper Exclusion List, to prevent this problem from recurring in the future.
