No "percentage done" indicator

There are two approaches to defragmentation, off-line defragmentation and on-line defragmentation. An off-line defragmenter is differentiated from on-line defragmenters in that you have to take a disk out of service (off-line) to use the defragmenter on it.

An off-line defragmenter analyzes a disk to determine the state of fragmentation and then maps out a rearrangement of the files on the disk that will reduce or eliminate the fragmentation. After mapping out where the files should go, it rearranges them. This type of defragmentation has to be done off-line to accommodate the drawbacks inherent in such a method. It does, however, allow the program to present an indicator of how far along in the defragmentation pass the defragmenter is.

An on-line defragmenter is one that processes disks while user jobs are active, even while user applications are accessing files on the same disk that is being defragmented. It is not necessary to take the disk off-line or allocate it to the defragmentation process. Since users can be adding, changing or deleting files while the defragmentation process is going on and Diskeeper analyzes each file individually, there is no way for it to "know" how far into to the whole defragmentation pass it is. The number, size and location of files on the disk can change dramatically during the course of the defragmentation pass without affecting Diskeeper.
