Pagefile not Defragmented
Diskeeper 4.0 defragments the page file at boot time. We recommend that you upgrade to version 4.0 as soon as possible. If you are running an earlier version of Diskeeper you can this method.
The paging file is held open for exclusive use by the Windows NT operating system. Diskeeper cannot defragment any file which is open for exclusive use. There is, however, a way to defragment the paging file, or at least reduce the degree of fragmentation of the paging file. The steps are:
-
Create a new paging file on another disk partition.
-
Reduce minimum and maximum size of the original paging file to zero KB.
-
Reboot your computer to cause the system to use the new temporary paging file.
-
Run Diskeeper on the original partition.
-
Re-create the paging file on the original partition.
-
Reduce the minimum and maximum size of the temporary paging file to zero.
-
Reboot your computer so the new paging file will be used on the original partition.
You need to run Diskeeper (step 4 above) on the original partition, since even with a fairly high percentage of free space, it is likely that free space will be quite fragmented. A moderately large file like a paging file will be created in a fragmented condition unless the free space has been consolidated prior to creating the file.
If you set the paging file Initial and Maximum sizes to the same value it prevents it fragmenting in the future.
