Latest Version to Add Features and Support for OpenVMS 7.2
Concurrent with Compaq pledging renewed support for OpenVMS, Executive Software announces a new version of Diskeeper for OpenVMS: Diskeeper 7.2!
This new version is now ready following the release of OpenVMS 7.2, and is free of charge to all Diskeeper customers with current support contracts.
Diskeepers new features include:
INDEXKEEPER: This new utility provides a safe, fast method for defragmenting the index file on each disk (INDEXF.SYS). This file, relied upon by OpenVMS, contains critical information about all the files on a disk volume, and also enables the operating system to identify and access the disk. When a disk is mounted, the index file is opened by the operating system, and is not closed until the disk is dismounted. As the file grows in size (the result of adding files and directories to the disk), it is likely that it will become fragmented. Fragmentation of the index file can slow performance system-wide, since it is accessed by any user or other process that accesses files on the disk. Perhaps even worse, when the index file becomes so fragmented that its file header cannot contain the map pointers which point to the fragments of the file, OpenVMS displays an error message indicating that the index file header is full, and new file creations and extensions are not allowed. Unfortunately, this typically occurs when a system is at its busiest, with users logged on trying to perform useful work. INDEXKEEPER is the answer!
IMPROVED FRAGMENTATION ANALYSIS UTILITY: There are several improvements made to the Fragmentation Analysis Utility (FAU) contained within Diskeeper. First, you might notice the name change from Disk Analysis Utility to Fragmentation Analysis Utility to more accurately reflect the utilitys function. Next, there are two new fields contained within the FAUs File Information section to better assist you in analysing defragmentation:
% of Disk Fragmented, which shows the percentage of occupied disk space that contains fragmented files.
# of Unwanted Fragments, which indicates the number of extra, unnecessary file fragments on the disk.

ULL SUPPORT FOR NEW OpenVMS 7.2: Diskeeper fully supports this exciting new version of OpenVMS, with its improved clustering, Windows NT® integration, enhanced system management, and many other features. Of course, Diskeeper also supports earlier versions of OpenVMS, as far back as OpenVMS 5.4 (VAX) and OpenVMS 6.1 (Alpha).
D
iskeeper still maintains all the features which made it the best of its breed. It is designed to work on disks which are being accessed and updated, without adversely affecting performance. Diskeeper still defragments with complete safety, never putting your data at risk. And, best of all, Diskeeper still utilises its famous Set It and Forget It® features that made it famous.
